| Founded
in 1771, Brunswick was designed on a grid, similar to the Savannah Plan,
and named in honor of the royal duchy of Braunsweig-Lunenburg, Germany,
ancestral home of the Hanoverian kings of England. Many streets and
squares still bear the name of this royal family and the military and
political heroes who served it. Designated in 1778 by George Washington
as one of the five original points of entry to the United States,
Brunswick is rich with both maritime and mainland history.
Today, Historic
Downtown Brunswick's magnificent deep water harbor, the beautiful and
revitalized Old Town commercial and residential historic district, and
enormous live oaks draped with Spanish moss, delight and charm all who
visit. A waterfront park with farmers market, shrimp boats, a myriad of
antique and specialty shops, walking and driving tours, and gracious,
accommodating residents, make Brunswick the quintessential small
southern town.
The Downtown
Development Authority and the Main Street Brunswick program work to
preserve Brunswick's historic buildings, streets and parks while
encouraging planned retail and residential development throughout Old
Town and the Historic District.
